Emerging trends suggest that real-time operations data will sustain a future transportation system. Government leadership and industry vanguards may face pressure to be deliberative with this data to achieve certain transportation and societal outcomes and prohibit others, especially outcomes from safety critical functions. The veracity, velocity and volume of transportation data will challenge institutions to facilitate data interoperability in a systems-of-systems approach supporting many novel concepts, such as a real-time transportation metaverse. To facilitate this, transportation professionals across the stakeholder spectrum are reckoning with fundamental data science inquiries regarding standards, safety, interoperability, authority and trust, privacy and ownership, equity in access and protections, cybersecurity, climate and environment sustainability, resiliency, assessing and adapting to uncertainty, and long-term changes and adaptability.
