The National Institutes of Health F31 fellowship is a competitive and prestigious award available to graduate students that provides generous pre-doctoral training support. In line with the program’s goal of developing students into productive independent researchers, the application requires prospective fellows to design a training plan tailored to their research interests and career goals. This roundtable, led by a current NIH fellow and her mentor, will offer student and faculty perspectives on this professional development opportunity, including information on the financial support provided, advice on navigating the grant preparation and submission process, and strategies for building strong proposals. The discussion will include practical advice on planning a submission timeline, building a strong mentorship team, identifying an appropriate study section, and other “grantsmanship” strategies focused on developing an application with distinguishing features and unique training opportunities. The roundtable is designed for both students interested in applying for NIH pre-doctoral fellowships and faculty interested in mentoring students through the NIH F31 fellowship process.
