Abstract:
|
A canonical mandate for the policy researcher is to do objective analyses to improve decision-making in the public sphere. Taking this mandate seriously means using every tool available to us to see as clearly as possible and act as wisely as possible. Data, and statistical methods for analyzing them, are an invaluable device for “seeing” and advising on prudent action. But there are value-laden/normative implications that arise when we take a data-driven view of the res publica. This talk will cover examples and lessons on the applications and implications of data-driven policy analysis from experience as an “information scientist” within the RAND corporation.
