One of the major challenges in developing statistics courses for practicing clinicians and health scientists is time, particular in academic medical centers where faculty having varying time schedules and varying amounts of protected research time. Additionally, adult learning research has suggested that the attention span of a typical adult learner is 15-20 minutes, after which lectures become less effect. In light of these considerations, we developed a biweekly, 30-minute online course for clinicians and health scientists at a large academic medical center. These sessions are held during lunch hour but also recorded and available online. There are 11 sessions, covering the following topics: the scientific method, research questions, study design/power, data types, descriptive statistics, data visualization, population and samples, comparing groups, regression, risk assessment, and test diagnostics. Each session has approximately 15-20 minutes of standard lecturing then followed by 10-15 minutes of practical demonstrations using the JMP Pro statistical software. Initial feedback from these sessions has been very positive.
