The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) approved a redesign plan for the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) in 2013 with the primary goal of reducing measurement error. As part of the redesign, online diaries will be implemented into production data collection. The Large Scale Online Diary Feasibility Test (LSF) was fielded from October 2019 to April 2020 with the main objective of assessing the performance of a two week diary survey using a device-optimized online mode and identifying any methodological, operational, or technical issues. Although the test focused on implementing an online diary, a paper diary was made available to respondents that were ineligible or otherwise unwilling to participate online. In this presentation we provide a brief overview of the LSF test's design and discuss mode selection rates and characteristics. We compare data quality measures within the LSF and between the LSF and current CE production diary, including counts of expenditures, expenditure amounts, and item nonresponse. This presentation will be of interest to survey methodologists, data producers, and data users.
