Data science is a new field, and it presents many opportunities for new participants in the discipline. However many stakeholders do not fully recognize the leadership roles that statisticians can and should take in data science.
In practice, this can result in statisticians missing out on key opportunities that could benefit them and the topics they are addressing. The various fields that make up data science have complementary strengths and weaknesses, of which a number of decision makers and contemporary peers may not be aware.
In this roundtable, the main presenter will provide actionable points to increase statistician leadership and career opportunities in multiple settings, including academia as well as the public and private sectors. He will highlight actionable paths to success as well as common stumbling blocks to avoid. The presentation will draw upon data in industrial/organizational psychology that informs transformational leadership, in contrast to the common practice of management-by-exception. Real-world examples will be provided, and roundtable participants will be encouraged to seek and provide input on opportunities that they have encountered.
