Abstract:

Historically, statisticians and mathematicians have infrequently pursued employment in legislative offices. Despite this trend, by virtue of their training statisticians and mathematicians possess useful skills that are applicable to legislative policymaking work tasks and that help to engender evidence-based policymaking. In this panel, three scientists currently serving in the United States Senate as Congressional Science Fellows offer their perspectives on what skills and abilities statisticians and mathematicians bring to legislative policymaking. Each panelist will provide examples of how they applied their scientific training in the policymaking process in addition to articulating challenges and opportunities of this work. At a time when lawmakers must confront complex, interdisciplinary problems like combating global pandemics and human-caused climate change, statisticians and mathematicians are uniquely positioned to positively contribute to the development and implementation of urgently needed evidence-based policies.
