Abstract:

It is becoming increasing clear that story telling is perhaps the most impactful way to communicate the message found in data. Nate Silver has built a career on this, first at the New York Times and now at fivethirtyeight.com. Howard Wainer has been a master of this art for decades. His 1994 article on the stories behind Napoleon’s March on Russia and the Mann Gulch Fire is a classic. Here Wainer weaves data analysis, graphics and story telling into powerful recounting of historical events. In this talk we will highlight some of the best moments of this career.
