Academic research reports often fail to reach a broad audience. Our peers read and enjoy our journal articles, and we succeed in advancing research in our academic communities, but how do we create major change in the larger public world? We need messaging that is interpretable by the non-expert, and we need to draw interest with interactive and compelling elements.
In this talk, we will explore ways to represent data visually, including a few misleading graphs and ways to improve them. Some visualizations covered include: Heatmaps, Violin plots, Boxplots, Treemaps, Scatterplots, Bubble plots, Sankey Diagrams, Volcano Plots, and Caterpillar Plots. We will also explore data filtering options, time-lapsing, dashboarding, and creating data visualizations intended for interactivity by consumers.
We hope you will leave this session with ideas to help get your message in a compelling, consumable, understandable form to drive the impact of your research.
