Abstract:
|
The present state of the system of national statistics in the U.S. features many highly developed data sources, supported by a very talented array of people working in a framework that supports transparency, independence and confidentiality. This system has been built with much intelligence and sacrifice over a long period. But it is increasingly recognized that the system must change in deep ways to accommodate the information content of the explosion of privately collected data, to combine data across agencies and levels of government in order to address larger questions, and to reexamine procedures that pose growing difficulties in terms of costs, timeliness or relevance of results. It is clearly time to look to steps that will move the current equilibrium in the most constructive way possible.
