Abstract:
|
The increased availability and accessibility of large healthcare datasets have expanded attention on the use of population data science in translational research. With biomedical informaticians and/or population data scientists at the table, it can be possible to test hypotheses generated in preclinical phases directly on a population level. We use case studies of biomedical research teams to show how translational research phases can be effectively navigated in a non-sequential manner when teams include scientists with expertise across the translational research spectrum. Preclinical/clinical scientists and population data scientists often have fundamentally different approaches to scientific discovery that can create discord on research teams. Collaborative biostatisticians who have had experience designing studies or analyzing data from many or all translational research phases have a unique ability to act as interpreter on these teams. We focus on case studies of effective team science to demonstrate the role of collaborative biostatistics as a bridge from preclinical discovery to population data science.
