Abstract

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collects participants’ information in three stages: screening, interview, and examination in a mobile examination center. The screening process identifies which household members will be selected as sampled persons to participate in the interview and examination. Previously, NHANES only collected limited demographic information about all household members at the screening stage. Starting in 2019, NHANES added five questions about the health of the household screener respondent at the screening stage. Based on the demographic information, screener respondents and other household members may or may not be selected into the NHANES sample. Regardless of whether the screener respondent is selected as a sampled person, the screener respondent serves as the best available proxy for the health status of sampled household members. In this project, we create propensity models to evaluate the association between the screener health question responses and the sampled person’s participation propensity, both for cases where the sampled person is the screener respondent and for cases where the sampled person is another household member
