Abstract:

The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) is a summer program established by the California State Legislature for high school students interested in STEM subjects. High school students apply to enroll in one of several clusters covering a wide range of topics from astronomy to genomics offered by one of the participating University of California campuses. We have developed a COSMOS cluster focused on data science in health sciences (DSHS). In this talk, we will discuss the DSHS curriculum including the prerequisites, content, and software choices. We will share course materials that can be adopted by other educators teaching data science to high school students. We will talk about the challenges we have faced and how we have overcome them. Finally, we will share suggestions for those who might be developing similar programs aimed at high school students.
