The education system in the U.S. has been seriously disrupted as a result of COVID-19, due to school openings, closings, in-person education, virtual education, and/or a hybrid of the two. While much of the daily news focuses on K-12 education, education has been disrupted at all levels. How much do we know about how America’s students are receiving education during the pandemic? How much do we know about changes in education plans, especially at the postsecondary level? What are the living conditions of America’s learners during the pandemic? We know that poor economic conditions, food insecurity, and homelessness all effect students’ ability to learn. The Household Pulse Survey, the result of a collaboration between federal statistical agencies, is documenting temporal trends in how individuals are experiencing stay-at-home orders, school closures, changes in spending patterns, and other abrupt and significant changes to American life during the pandemic. This roundtable discussion will share some of the relevant Household Pulse Survey data and discuss additional emerging data collections that provide further insights into the impacts of the pandemic on America’s learners.
