Abstract:

In statistics and data science, three important elements of competent practice are a) defining the questions to be answered; b) identifying and prioritizing the types of methods acceptable for answering those questions; and c) ensuring that the fundamentals of ethical practice are followed. We will explore how the definition of questions influences the stories practitioners can tell with different methods, including some experiences illustrating those influences. Storytelling is a powerful means both in science and politics, and is worthy of careful ethical reflection. The roles of the ASA Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice in ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and rigor will be highlighted. We will also share about how the ASA promotes this aspect of professionalism. Then, in the context of funded research, we will talk about how these questions relate to stakeholders of the research results and the funding decisions.
