Abstract:

As statisticians we often have to convey results of our work to audiences of non-statisticians. These audiences may include scientific colleagues who are participants in the work, scientists who are unfamiliar with the work, the media through press releases and interviews, and the general public. In this talk we will discuss the effective use of stories to convey statistical information. Stories have fascinated people throughout history, and results conveyed through relevant stories are more likely to be remembered than results conveyed through other methods. Science journalists are familiar with this technique, and it therefore is not surprising that most media reports of scientific results begin with a story.
