Abstract:
|
The discussion will target current students, postdoctoral associates and junior faculty members who are looking for—or have recently secured—a biostatistics academic job. I worked as a statistician and then biostatistician for 15 years. My job included consulting, collaboration and independent research. In addition, I served as a Chair and member on multiple search committees for biostatistics and statistics faculty positions. I will share my experiences, then we will discuss how to best prepare yourself for a future position or set yourself up for success at a current position, how to handle unexpected situations related to consulting that could arise at work and how to deal with these situations. What did motivate me to propose such a topic for a roundtable discussion? I believe that informal setting of a roundtable discussion is ideal for addressing professional development topics at the JSM. This event will provide an opportunity to engage students and recent graduates in JSM activities. The participants will enhance their knowledge about different types of academic positions for biostatisticians and how to increase their chances of succeeding at the job of their choice.
