The Caucus has always been a place to find friendship and support in a confusingly large organization – with opportunities to mentor, be mentored, and find lifelong friends. In the ‘80’s it came into its own as a driver of change in the ASA – advancing programs and policies to better support those with issues common among women (e.g., juggling child-care responsibilities; crafting a career without a “regular” full-time job or as an independent consultant; solving the “two-body” career problem) but not exclusive to them. We also found ways to collaborate with the Committee on Women in Statistics to expand our presence within ASA (e.g., with the Gertrude Cox Scholarship Run and its T-shirts commemorating women scientists) and to stabilize our funding (so we no longer needed to sneak refreshments into our receptions!). I was CWS President in 1986 and was lucky to be able to learn from Nancy Gordon, my very organized predecessor, who had assembled a 3-ring binder to track required dates and tasks. I realized that we needed an archivist and found a volunteer. Sadly, the “archiving box” didn’t survive to the digital era! I hope to recover some of our lost history through this session.
