Teaching 100% online has created challenges for all of us, but it has also created opportunities. In order to keep students engaged and feeling like they are part of a bigger community, it was necessary to build in structures for lots of practice with the material and opportunities for students to interact. Classes were taught during the regular synchronous time slot (although recorded for asynchronous review), and students were expected to gather asynchronously during non-class times. With students living in time zones across the globe, they were able to schedule regular meeting times to work in pods on the weekly assignments. Additionally, the zoom breakout rooms allowed for synchronous interaction of groups of students who might not have even known each other’s names in an in-person class. I will discuss the different activities implemented this year with reflection on what worked, on who benefitted the most, and on what I’ll bring to my in-person classes when the time comes.
