Biostatistics training is undergoing a change as emerging expansions in technology and innovative thinking are rapidly reshaping data acquisition and knowledge. The assessment process for PhD-readiness, however, has seen relatively little transformation. Most universities still rely on some form of written examination on foundational knowledge of statistics, much of which is obsolete in modern research. Furthermore, there is little evidence that performance on one or more comprehensive tests is a solid measure of future PhD success. Several departments across the US have considered modifications, ranging from replacing the written test by a combination of data analysis and an oral test, to abolishing the examination altogether. Purpose of the proposed panel discussion is to share ideas motivated by the evolving role of Biostatistics in health sciences. Our diverse panel includes individuals from various departments across the country, who are intimately involved in PhD student assessment in Biostatistics. Discussion topics will be designed based on responses to a survey given to ASA section members as well as graduate students. Ample time will be reserved for a Q&A session.
