Statistics is one of the foundational communities in data science along with database management and distributed and parallel systems as stated by ASA. Interdisciplinary nature of statistics requires substantial collaborative effort. In the era of data to understand and interpret information through effective collaborations, the ability to communicate scientific methods and findings is extremely important. Statisticians transitioning into leadership positions require effective communication skills and need to be good data story tellers. Statisticians without a leadership title would also benefit from such skills to have an impact. Other important leadership qualities such as good interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, empathic abilities, and effective time management would help statisticians communicate the importance of statistical science and apply their technical skills to make the most out of collaborations. In this panel, we would like to learn from successful data science leaders in academia, government and industry about their journey to leadership, developing the necessary skills, the obstacles and ways to overcome those, and the role of gender in leadership.
