The relationship between police use of force and a range of potential explanatory factors has been widely studied in the field of criminology but with various conclusions. Specifically, the connection between police use of force and violent crime is of great interest to methodologists, especially those in criminology. We seek to quantify this relationship while preserving the point level of both kinds of data. We also control for other factors, including socioeconomic characteristics of communities, other point-level data such as officer-involved shootings, and individual characteristics of both the officer and citizen involved in the use of force incident. Our framework addresses point-areal spatial misalignment through incorporating a point process outcome and areal unit covariates. Through this framework and data, we create novel contributions about police use of force while accounting for urban sociological processes.
