Abstract:

Public sharing of datasets is often an essential scientific activity for research groups supported by public/government funding. However, its implementation can be impeded by many factors, including ambiguity in data sharing policies, large dataset sizes, complexity of the accrued data over multiple data collection systems, and/or a lack of data standards. The panelists, including data sharing experts and leaders of the statistical and data management center of several large clinical trials groups, will summarize the rich datasets resulted from multiple decades of clinical research through preventive or therapeutic clinical trials related to infectious diseases and oncology. These datasets are available as a rich trove of resources for statisticians alike to mine for new scientific discovery and statistical methods development. This panel is intended to create an open forum for statisticians and policy makers from different biomedical fields to share information regarding available data repositories, learn successes and challenges from each other on data sharing practices, and contribute to maximizing the value of biomedical research via effective data sharing mechanisms.
