As a statistical collaborator, understanding the domain experts’ research in order to clarify their research question is incredibly important. In a recent project with domain experts from the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, my group of statistical collaborators and I spent the first few meetings understanding the research project. After we had a grasp of the biological processes being tested, we asked the domain experts what research questions they were asking. We were able to distill their initial interest in forty variables, requiring forty tests for significance, down to interest in the five most important biological processes for their research. Doing role-plays as a statistical collaborator with classmates as domain experts gave me the training to clarify the research question of the domain experts' research.
