Abstract:

Herb Spirer taught a generation of human rights activists to think rigorously about data. With his wife Louise Spirer, Herb taught me to ask better questions, to write more cogently, and to think about data more seriously. In this talk, I'll recount how Herb reasoned about data on killings in Haiti for a study we did for the truth commission in 1995; then what he taught me and Paul Kobrak as we wrote a book about quantitative patterns of violence in Guatemala; and then how Herb and Louise gently shepherded a group of activists through an editorial process to create a book that's had lasting value. I want to recall Herb's humor, his broad humanity and his specific kindness, and how he gently taught me to be a better scientist.
