Abstract:

Statistical Offices around the world are trying to nudge their respondents to participate in surveys using behavioral insights. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts over 100 household and business surveys across the nation each year. Persuading respondents to participate in these various data collection efforts is the central focus of much of our research. The Census Bureau is turning to insights gained from behavioral sciences to improve our communications with respondents with the goal of increasing response rates. This round table will highlight work the Census Bureau has done to integrate lessons learned from behavioral science research to communicate with respondents and motivate their response to Census Bureau surveys. Research includes efforts to boost participation through modifications to American Community Survey (ACS) mail materials, use of eye-tracking to evaluate new approaches to designing letters for a variety of surveys, and use of incentives to nudge respondents selected for the American Housing Survey. Participants are invited to share their work using behavioral insights in data collection efforts.
