Title: Helping to Save the Business of Journalism, One Data Insight at a Time
Author(s): Laura Evans*
Companies: The New York Times

Abstract:

In a 16-year career dedicated to strengthening journalism, Laura Evans, PhD, is a rarity in that she has worked at The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and, currently, The New York Times, three of America's biggest and most vital news institutions. Her data work in media also overlaps with perhaps the most tumultuous two decades of change for mainstream media in America, buffeted by continuing technology shifts and digital transitions, questioning the sustainability of news. Combine this with an ever-changing field of data analysis, collection and capabilities, Laura's journey highlights a quiet nimbleness built on deep understanding and application of statistics and data applications, with insights dedicated to help the survival of journalism, one whose behind-the-scenes work has been referred to in scores of articles in America's top newspapers, yet without there being a single Laura Evans byline. In a field that is both overhyped and filled with immense possibility, how she adapts to change while helping media organizations adapt to new ways of decision-making and programming, will shed light on the vital role data and insights are now playing in helping media companies stay healthy and sustain American journalism's vital role for audiences and for our Democracy.
