Abstract:

Most careers reach a point where the adoption of good leadership practice is essential for success. Although this is universally acknowledged in business and related fields, the mathematical sciences have been slower to take note. ASA is changing that. Through the Leadership Institute, a number of initiatives are in development or now offered to ensure statisticians have access to the best leadership training opportunities available. With the right stewardship, the Institute is poised for growth and expansion. My vision is for ASA to be known for its leadership training, for statisticians to have broad access to that training, and for other disciplines to recognize that statistical leadership can benefit their careers as well. The importance of leadership training transcends employment sector but requires adaptation for relevance to the different stages of a statistician's career. I will reflect on some leadership opportunities afforded me during my career and the training that helped me seize those opportunities. I will talk about the critically important role that ASA plays in supporting our leaders and developing new ones. And I will make a shameless plug for statisticians to take hold of leadership today, in this fast-growing world of data science. Who better to help shape the future than a highly skilled and well-trained statistical leader? That, dear friends and colleagues, is the question!
