Abstract:

Ingram Olkin's many contributions to these interrelated fields will be selectively surveyed. His early work on multivariate distribution theory, characterization of distributions, and multivariate Chebyshev inequalities led to his career-long love of inequalities of all shapes and sizes - probabilistic, geometric, analytic - culminating in his classic treatise on Majorization (with Al Marshall and Barry Arnold). The Marshall-Olkin Multivariate Exponential Distribution, the Olkin-Baker Functional Equation, and the Shepp-Olkin Entropy Conjecture (solved only recently) are but a few of the major results that bear his name. The importance of his own work is matched only by the countless results of his students and collaborators that were inspired by his curiosity and enthusiasm. The evolution over time of some of his major ideas will be illustrated.
