Abstract #333023
Title: Providing Introductory Students a Big Data Experience
Author(s): Paul Stephenson* and Patricia Stephenson and Lori Hahn
Companies: Grand Valley State University and Grand Valley State University and Grand Valley State University
Keywords: Big Data; Introductory Statistics; Introductory Computing
Abstract:

Given the emerging presence of extremely large frames of data, the authors believe it is important to provide introductory statistics students with a tractable experience to some of the issues associated with analyzing big data. More specifically, the authors are interested in providing the students with exposure to data which (1) roughly represents population data, (2) must be rate adjusted for interpretation, and (3) contains anomalies and outliers resulting from coding issues. In this presentation the authors will discuss several examples that can be used to engage students and offer students a realistic big data experience. We will demonstrate materials that can be infused into a first or second introductory statistics course.
