Title: Beach Volleyball Team Optimization

Abstract:

Since teams consist of only two players, beach volleyball is a game where the effect of the mix of individual player skill sets on team performance can be more easily explored. We assessed the 'fit' of various types of beach volleyball players, based on their skill sets, in order to better understand what factors are most important when making an optimum beach volleyball team. After gathering and processing over 100,000 touches by players, both men and women, from the 2016 Rio Olympics we used a Markov chain framework to simulate team performance. From the simulated team performance, we plan to derive an ideal beach volleyball team based on the skill sets of the individual players.
