Abstract #332725
Title: Census Efforts to Reduce the Undercount of Young Children
Author(s): Gina Walejko* and Scott Konicki
Companies: U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Census Bureau
Keywords: census; non-response; undercount
Abstract:

Demographic analysis estimated that young children had a 4.6 percent national undercount rate during the 2010 census. Although the U.S. Census Bureau exerts a great amount of effort to count everyone in the United States during the decennial census, nevertheless, some people go uncounted. A differential undercount, not counting one group at a higher rate than others, can be particularly problematic for accurate counts of people of varied races, ethnicities, gender, and age. This presentation focuses on one undercounted demographic group that has received much attention in the run-up to the next decennial census in 2020, children under the age of five. This presentation briefly presents the issue, describes potential reasons for this undercount, and then explains how the Census Bureau is developing field enumerator trainings, messaging materials, and other efforts to reduce the undercount of young children in 2020.
