Abstract:

We will use three case studies to illustrate the use of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) in applied statistics. The three case studies will be: (1) predicting disease free survival for Glioblastoma Multiforme using the shape of the tumor as covariates; (2) modeling surfaces without using landmarks and defining a distance between shapes that are not isomorphic; (3) modeling the shape of blood vessels in the brain and relating this to response variables such as age. In all three case studies we will highlight the basic topology concepts and the statistical reasons why these topological concepts are useful for the application at hand.
