Abstract:

In climate change research, variability in global temperature is considered as important as the rise in average temperatures since it is associated with extreme climate conditions preventing planetary life from gradually adapting to those conditions. Global temperature variability studies remain less addressed compared to trend pattern studies. Our study aims to investigate if there is a faster growing recent trend and an increased variability over time in the global temperature anomaly. These two study objectives will be addressed by time series modeling using the average global temperature anomaly data during 1880-2017, where our focus is to compare temporal acceleration and variability between two periods, before 1950 and after 1980. We introduce statistical methods for comparing two trend slopes and measuring temporal variability in a time series. Simulation and analytical results will provide an advanced understanding of uncertainty in future climate change and its impact on global ecological habitat.
