Abstract:
|
This quasi-experimental study examined the impact of growth mindset lecture (GML) of undergraduate statistics students at a traditional research university and a non-traditional college. Results suggested that non-traditional college students' perceived statistics as more difficult subject than university students. The value of statistics is more recognized by students receiving the GML. Students with GML felt significantly more confident about mastering statistics compare to the other group. There was no significant interaction effect based on institution and the GML. Course data indicates that nontraditional college students had higher final grades in Statistics and significantly lower withdraw rates when they received the GML. University students had very similar final grades and no significant difference in withdraw rates based on receiving the GML. Results from this study suggest that emphasizing growth mindset helps students' with their confidence and value of statistics at the beginning of the semester (regardless of institution type). GML can also reduce withdraw rates of statistics courses both at non-traditional colleges, and traditional research university.
