Abstract:

This paper constructs probability proportional-to-size (pps) ranked set sample from a stratified population. A pps ranked set sample selects the units with selection probabilities proportional to their size and then induces further stratification based on their relative positions in a small comparison set. The information content of the sample is increased by inducing additional structure in the sample based on their position information in the comparison set and the use of unequal selection probabilities. A pps ranked set sample is selected from each stratum population to form the pps ranked set sample. The paper constructs unbiased estimators for the population mean and total, and their variances. For settings, where pps sample is appropriate, the estimators of population mean and total based on new sampling design provide substantial amount of improvement in efficiency. The new sampling design is applied to apple production data to estimate the total apple production in Turkey.
