Title: A Venn-Diagram Analysis of the Role of Statistics in Data Science
Author(s): John McKenzie*

Keywords: Analytics; Business Analytics; Computer Science; Machine Learning; Mathematics; Visualization
Abstract:

There continues to be constantly changing definitions of data science, many of which include statistics. Visualization is usually mentioned in such definitions. A common way to describe data science visually is through a Venn diagram. This paper will investigate how such diagrams for data science and related interdisciplinary terms, such as business analytics, incorporate statistics. This paper may be of particular interest to statistics educators for two reasons: 1) providing advice to their students about the place of statistics in data science and 2) working on programs that incorporate data science at their institutions.
