This study aims to determine the impact of the Great Recession (2007-2009) on age-related changes in health. Using three waves of data from the population-based Survey of Mid-Life Development in the United States (MIDUS), a national study of health and well-being in middle-aged and older adults, this research analyzes the effects of the recent recession on changes in self-reported functional limitations measured by activities of daily living (ADLs). The study defines a target group of subjects who were surveyed two separate times spanning a period that encompassed the onset of the recession. Performing statistical matching methods with respect to a series of explanatory variables, the study also defines a comparison group of subjects with similar characteristics to the experimental group but whose health information was collected in two waves spanning a time prior to the recession. The study hypothesizes that a stressor like the Great Recession will significantly accelerate the rate of declines in function.
