Abstract:

This paper examines three approaches in understanding the effects of wage and employment flows in the US economy. The first method provides a measure of gross job gains and gross job losses by pre-defined level of wages based on the quartile distribution of average wages across all establishments. These wage quality levels (low, medium or high) are used in a similar fashion as existing data including age and size of businesses in the measurement of gross job creation and job destruction. In the second method, the authors measure 'wage dynamics' in the same manner as the existing Business Employment Dynamics are measured. The authors use the changes in total wages from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) at the establishment level to gauge flows of gains and losses in total wages and measure the dynamics of wage gains and losses. In the final approach, the authors measured average wages paid separately for establishments that opened, expanded, closed and contracted in association with employment gains and losses in the Business Employment Dynamics (BED) data series. The authors evaluates strengths and weaknesses of each approach and recommend a preferred method.
