Abstract:

Involving undergraduates in culminating and/or real-data experiences where they must communicate their findings is very important for making sure they are prepared for the next stage of their career. Including students in these experiences often fits in with university, college, and department goals, as well as fitting in with the ASA Curriculum guidelines for undergraduate programs. Of course successfully collaborating with undergraduate students on statistical research projects can be very difficult. We define an undergraduate research project as one that uses data to study an unanswered real-world question that matters. In this talk I will describe a department-wide program at North Carolina State University that aims to find and develop reasonable projects as well as support students and faculty throughout the research process. Successful strategies for mentoring students will also be discussed.
