Abstract:

Academic Department Chairs have many responsibilities, but typical academic careers do not often specifically prepare faculty for the variety of challenges facing a chair. As faculty members try to determine whether they should throw their hat in the Department Chair ring, there are many questions they should ask, including: What are the responsibilities of the position? Why do you want to be Chair? Is the time right? What will you gain and what will you lose if you take the position? Should you stay or should you go? In this panel, Department Chairs/Heads with a range of experiences across statistics and biostatistics will share their stories. Each will talk briefly about their department, the process by which they became chair, what they enjoy/dislike about the role, what has surprised them about their role, and how they knew it was the right time to take on this responsibility. After each panelist shares their experiences, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. In order to #leadwithstatistics, it is essential that we prepare the next generation of leaders in statistics. This panel will help early and mid-career faculty assess whether they are ready to lead.
