Abstract:

With the increased emphasis on sports analytics, and with the generous support of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CPMS), the BYU Dept. of Statistics has been able to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with a number of athletic teams at BYU. At the beginning of the academic year, student teams are assigned to meet with coaches of 10 of the university athletic teams. In these initial meetings, coaches outline questions that they believe the students could address. In consultation with their statistics advisor, the questions of interest are refined and focused. The students begin to gather data by: viewing video of practices or matches, attending matches, putting coaches data in electronic form, creating applications to ease data input, etc. Once data are gathered, analyses are performed and coaches are given results. At the conclusion of the academic year, students present their work at the Student Research Conference supported by CPMS. Current projects include determining risk of offensive play calls for the football team, determining shot clock efficiency for the women's basketball team, and determining optimal set placement for the women's VB team.
