Abstract:

Preparation for Industrial Careers in the Mathematical Sciences (PIC MATH) is an MAA and SIAM program supported by NSF to promote faculty development of a course to prepare students for careers in business, industry or government. After attending a five-day workshop, participants are expected to teach a PIC MATH projects course. The workshop provides ideas for generating projects and guidelines for structuring the PIC MATH course. I attended the workshop in Spring 2016 and offered my projects course Spring 2017. In this presentation I will describe the four projects I developed for the course, how I prepared students to work on the projects, how student work was evaluated, and how the course and projects prepared them for a statistical career.
