Abstract:

Survey nonresponse has increased in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Adjusting sample weights for nonresponse may reduce the bias of health estimates. However, as neither survey responses nor reasons for nonresponding are available for nonrespondents, both the magnitude of nonresponse bias and the ability of adjustments to reduce bias are unknown. NHANES collects participants' information in three stages: home screening for survey eligibility, home interview, and physical examination in a mobile examination center. This simulation study uses a multiple-cycle aggregated NHANES sample as the target population and generates nonrandom nonresponse indictors using interview information to create simulated datasets. As only external data and screening information are available for actual NHANES sample weight adjustments, for each simulated dataset, sample weights adjusted for nonresponse are created using screening information. Sample weights are further calibrated using information from the National Health Interview Survey. Weighted estimates from the simulated NHANES datasets are compared to the value from the aggregated NHANES data.
