Abstract:

To understand the distribution of fire duration is an important objective in many wildfire control studies. The exact start time of a wildfire, however, is never available and thus the full length of the fire duration is not recorded. We propose an estimation procedure for fire duration distribution using first-hitting-time model and the recorded longitudinal fire size information. We derive the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator and compare it with a few existing approaches by simulation. A collection of wildfire records is used to motivate and illustrate the proposed approach.
