Title: Scaling a Data Science Curriculum to the Masses: Success and Failures in the Undergraduate Classroom
Author(s): Thomas Fisher*
Companies: Miami University
Keywords: Curriculum; Data science ; Education
Abstract:

As the field of statistics and data science has exploded in the past few years, the clientele in our academic programs has changed. Now that data science, analytics and statistics are popular buzz words and majors, we teach not just a select group of students but many that are choosing the degree since its "hot." As educators we strive to have more students join our major, but scaling programs to a larger audience is not trivial. We will discuss the challenges, successes and failures of implementing a data science curriculum to a larger, sometimes less prepared, population. Specific examples will from our curriculum will be provided.
