Abstract:

Blogging as a communication medium is egalitarian, easy to get started in, and, compared to many ways that statistics and data science practitioners can share their work, remarkably free of gatekeeping. No one is going to stop you from doing it, for better or worse. During this panel, I will share my own experience of using a blog as part of my career transition into data science and as a medium for gradually bootstrapping a project into a full book, written in the open using the bookdown package for R. This project grew from an initial blog post to a final result that is the largest single piece of work I've completed since my PhD dissertation; the story along the way involves the creation of open source software, the growth of productive professional relationships, and some perspective on why and how to share statistical computing work in our broader community.
