Title: Teaching Probability via Stories and Mistakes
Author(s): Joseph Blitzstein*
Companies: Harvard University
Keywords: teaching; probability
Abstract:

Stories have captured people's imaginations for thousands of years. We will discuss the role of stories in teaching probability. Several kinds of stories will be featured, including mathematical, empirical, and animated.

Probability blends together intuitive and counterintuitive results so seamlessly that blunders are very common, even when material has been presented very clearly. We will discuss and categorize mistakes that have been ensnaring people for centuries, from Newton and Leibniz to the beginning student.
