Abstract:

The 2016 GAISE guidelines include the new emphasis "Give students experience with multivariable thinking". This talk will discuss ways to teach this topic in introductory statistics using data visualizations. Many "advanced" data visualizations are engaging and easily accessible to introductory students, but, perhaps due to an overcrowded curriculum, are often excluded from a first course. Here we discuss ways to teach multivariable thinking by incorporating additional variables into familiar plots, while also building an appreciation for data and data visualization by exposing intro students to visualizations far beyond the static one and two variable plots typically taught in intro stat.
