One conclusion from the NSF-sponsored ASA Department Chairs Workshop about "Success, Opportunities, and Challenges for Statistics and Biostatistics in the Data Science Era," is that today's statistics graduates, to be most effective in the era of data science, must complement their technical "statistical thinking" skills with non-technical skills in communication and collaboration. This paper will highlight non-technical skills in communication and collaboration that statisticians can leverage to thrive in data science. These skills include structuring approaches to problem solving; conducting effective meetings with domain experts; asking great questions; listening, summarizing, and paraphrasing; explaining statistics to non-statisticians; and presenting statistical results and recommendations to non-technical experts. This paper and the others in this session will have wide appeal to statisticians from industry, government, and academia and will be especially appealing to statistics students, early career statisticians, or consulting and collaborative statisticians who may be thinking of how to enhance their career or make a career change to thrive in today's era of data science.
